Highbridge Hustle and Flow Team Relay Race
Date: Saturday, April 26th, 8 am
Location: Highbridge Park at the corner of Harlem River Drive and Dyckman
Presented by NYCMTB. Sponsored by Diablo Freeride Park (and more to come)

The Highbridge Hustle and Flow race is where lycra and body armor meet

Imagine a team-relay race that pairs the baddest XC/'Cross/Road climbers with the quickest young pump trackers and the sickest DH pinners and Super-D trail bombers. Set them out, time-trial-style against the clock in an all-out sprint race through the woods of Upper Manhattan. The XC'er climbs through snaking singletrack, the youth hauls through the pump track, the DH'er blasts back down a berm- and drop-infested freeride trail, an XC/'Cross/Road rider sprints up an absurdly steep paved path at full bore, then the Super-D'er rips back down a technical XC trail (Rough Ryder) that makes grown men cry. Tough? Yes. Fast? You bet. Fun? Of course. It's the first-ever Highbridge Hustle & Flow!

30 teams of 5 riders will test their mettle on the Highbridge Park trails for their chance to sit in the hot seat and claim victory in a race unlike any in the Northeast. For those of extraordinary skill and fitness who think they can hack it all, a limited number of solo entries are also available (please contact Jamie to arrange for solo entry). Great prizes from sponsors await, but this race isn't about medals or trinkets, it's about guts, glory... and survival.

Download a pdf map of the course here:
http://www.nycmtb.com/highbridge/highbridge-hustle-race-map.pdf

Race schedule:

8-10 am. Registration and practice.
10 am. Racer meeting.
10:30-noon. Seeding runs.
1pm. Racer meeting
1:30-3pm. Finals.

Cash and merchandise prizes for the top 3 teams and individuals will be presented later in the evening at the NYC premiere of The Collective's new movie "Seasons," at the Knitting Factory (free tickets for the top 3 teams, and the top three individuals, too!). More information is here:

http://www.knittingfactory.com/show.php?event_id=114029

There will be a dirt jump/pump track clinic at 10 am for under-18 youth led by Tom Oakes of Trailmasters Touring ( http://www.trailmasterstouring.com ). All teams are welcome to bring their own under-18 youth member for the pump track leg of the race, but teams without a youth member will be paired with a youth from the morning clinic for their afternoon final race run.

Entry fee is $60 (a mere $15 per adult team member) and pre-registration is mandatory. Register on Bikereg:

http://www.BikeReg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=6211

Come kick off the season with a fun race that's unlike anything you've ever raced before...

Should be fun. I'm putting the word out to NYC roadie crew, too, so if anyone needs to draft a climber, I'm sure there will be a few interested in joining up. Got some good hook-ups coming our way from sponsors. The whole idea is to do a race that's not just for the "racers." Great too that the start/finish is 50 feet from the 10 foot drop at the bottom of the freeride trail for those who want to show off for the cameras...   Wink

Race during the day, movie premiere that evening... good times.

That should be a sick finish line.  That drop can be a 5 foot roll down drop or 10+ huck at top race speed.  I flat landed it in the mud and almost lost it.  It probably needs some of the trees at the bottom cleared out of the run out.

Definitely. Two work days scheduled before the race, so we'll definitely work on it. Probably will move and re-plant at least one of those tree/bushes that are in the way.

First team is already registered- two fast XC/roadies plus Chris Skolnick on the DH, Antonio Sini on Rough Ryder, and Dave Holzer on the pump track...

They all suck,,,,   joking!   I thought it was teams of 3 people?  2 peeps ride uphill, one does rough rider, one pumptrack, and one dh.  Don't make me call in some secret weapons.

5 people per team-

1. Uphill (XC)
2. under-18 member rides the pump track
3. Jump line and freeride trail (DH)
4. up the paved path (road)
5. down rough ryder (super-D)

I hear BMW's putting a team together with their alleycat racer Austin Horse.

Tom Oakes from Trailmasters touring is going to lead the youth clinic in the morning. Tom's a dual slalom racer in addition to being a mountain bike instructor and a public school teacher...

The under 18 limit for the pump track position is throwing my plan off.  I have a close friend that used to race AAA pro bmx but is 30 years old.  So far I have one roadie, one super d, and me on DH.  See if I can find an 18 year old djer.  I don't know anyone under 23, specially that rides dj's.  This is a very interesting race scenario.

Anyone from BBR thinking of putting a team together.  I would race super-d, or DH!

If you don't have an under-18 team member, then we'll provide one for you. We don't expect everyone to be able to bring their own youth team member. The pump track section is so short compared to the other legs, that a minimal amount of time will be gained or lost there.

The race is blowin' up. Solo class is going to be out of control, with former World Cup DH pro turned 2007 Sea Otter Super-D champ Jurgen Beneke going up against top Northeast DH pro Derrick Nobman and more.

Get your teams together now.

Also, we've got a few women XC/road riders looking for women to fill out their all-womens teams, so if you're a woman (or know one) who'd like to ride the DH or Super-D legs, let me know and I'll put you in touch with the team organizer...

Day-of registration is in effect. Tranq-dart a roadie in Prospect, bag 'em up and drag him to HB for the race tomorrow. Should be a blast.

Amazing day. Beneke is a monster. Props to all the guys who ran solo, especially those who ran it solo and on a team.

Oh, and, the Seasons premier? Yeah. Awesome. 200+ showed up at the knitting factory to watch. Line down the block. Yoni's highbridge doc was amazing. Big congrats to him.

So, what did you do on Saturday?  Undecided

Had something really cool happen this weekend RE: Hustle and Flow. The winning team, Ghostship Clothing, won a Diablo season pass as part of their grand prize package (along with a Bontrager tubeless ready wheel set, 4 pairs of tires, a NYC Freeride stem, and assorted other goods). They asked if they could trade the season pass in for single day tickets, so they could share them among the team members. When I asked Shawn from Diablo if he would do that, he went one further and is giving EACH of the team members a SEASON PASS.

If your team had won the Hustle and Flow, you too could have walked away with over $1700 in prizes!

Thanks to Diablo for their support of NYCMTB and our events...
