The thing about the steelset is the insertion is SOOOO deep.  Alot of shops dont have, or dont know how to use properly - headtube facing and reaming tools (or BB sets)

As Dirtbag said it can be very difficult to take them out and I have read several stories witht the CK steel. Gerald told me he thinks its too much of a good thing? But it looks sexy  Cheesy

I actually had to cut my frame open just to remove my steel set, but then I traded it because I didnt want to deal with it anymore. $175 is big pimpin for a headset like that.

No doubt Chris King makes the best headasets - but I have never had a problwm with any of mine.. granted I am not Wade Simmons... buuuuuuuut....

My Cane Creek from 95 is still going strong, and you cant find a better performing/more durable headset than a Pig DH Pro... (Lighter yes)

it is my official hardcore headset, trailbikes and XC get the CK Alum..

AH - and I have heard several stories of difficulty geting them out-
A) WOnt come out
B) Will come out if you cut the frame open
C) Came out, but took such a beating to get it out, its ugly now...

I really dont think they're necessary...  Several alternatkve... that Diabolous looks good, and without the 1.5" insertion!
