are avid mechanical disc brake calipers front and rear specific?
i have a front avid caliper; can i use it as a rear brake?

I never understood the front/rear thing - they appear identical, and I have placed them side by side - at this point it is very possible that I switched them at some time!!

I dont think it matters, but thats just an observation!

I can answer this, I doesnt matter IMO. I run avids front & rear and what ever way they will fit. I never noticed the difference, once adjusted the brakes work well in either front or rear of the bike.

awesome, thanks fellas.

the one thing i may have heard at some point was that some front brakes are built more burlier to deal with the higher brake forces of the front end, but even if that is consideration, i'd be running a front brake in the rear which means it should be more than fine. cool beans.

I don't think it matters front or rear on mechanical brakes. Hydros are another story.  Those Avid mechs are pretty strong, I have one on front of my hard tail now.

I've learned too much about science over the years for no brakes (gravity + velocity).  Also learned a bit about compound fractures, ligament damage, rehab etc.

I didnt crash last year because of not having a brake... but I would not take my brake off my mob. speed manual life!

All my major compound injuries were on a skateboard with no brakes.
