: Looking for good tires
: iggy November 04, 2005, 01:36:38 PM
Im in the market for some tires for street & dirt. I have look at plenty of tires and Im trying to find something to suit my needs. Im looking for a mid-weight, semi-grippy, high-pressure, under 2.3 and have a strong sidewall(nothing paper thin, I just want to be able do some grinds and worry about a blowout). I was running a Holy Roller, which work great, but I shredding the sidewalls too fast. I like the Hookworms, but they weight alot and are 2.5. I also had Halo Twinrails, decent sidewalls, but scary on wet surfaces. Im considering a couple different tires, maybe you guys can help me narrow it down.

First choice, Tioga FS-100:
100psi freestyle tyre with wrap-around tread. Ideal for street riding.
    * Standard rubber compound
    * Steel bead
    * 66TPI

(http://www.wiggle.co.uk/images/tiga%20factory%20fs100.jpg)

Second choice:
Directional, dirt tire with a wrap around knobby tread design.
Great for race or trails. 30- 60 psi
Size; 1.75

(http://www.danscomp.com/products/TIRESBMX/442155.jpg)

Three choice;
Directional, knobby dirt tire with a wrap around tread design for more aggressive turns.
30- 60 psi.
Size: 1.85

and these are my last resort if I cant find anything:
Nokian XXX:
2.4 and a whopping 1280gms

(http://www.suomityres.fi/bike/bmx/FRONT_BMX.jpg)

Hookworms:
2.5 and 1000gms

If there's any others I havent consider. please post them. I am looking for suggestions and comments. Thanks.

what about primo dirt monsters or tioga comp IIIs?
both tried and true.

i ran the dirt monsters in 20" and they were good, tough tires.
i think the 24"s should be fine as well.
the tiogas in a 24x2.125 are pretty beefy and durable too.

i like my motos but their grip is not the most consistent/confidence inspiring.
maybe the moto diggers?
i plan on trying those FS100s soon if i can get em.
put em on my cruiser first most likely.

blahblahblah...

I really like my DMR's. I used to have Hookworms and they slipped alot. These are more grippy and stable.

ive been using specialized pro 2.0 on my rear for a couple weeks. same as vdigi mentioned.  its been good to me on the streets and dirt.

they also have a tire called rhythm in 2.1 looks good too, maybe even in front.

I looked at the DMRs before, but they fall into that paper thin sidewall catergory. I didnt know Primo had that dirt monster in 24s. I like the Tiogas Comp 3, but I guess Im looking for a more streetish tire. Even though I brought some tires for now, so I wouldnt have ride around 2.5-2.7s I ran for the Creek after my Holy Rollers died.  I have a 1.75 in the rear, but its to small I can feel the rim on hops, so I guess nothing smaller than 2.1.
How are the Specialized side walls, are they meaty or those thing feel like theyre on a diet. I like the tread, looks grippy enough. Also where did you get them?

I have that 2.0 specialized tire in 24" . It's like new, I used it literally twice while waiting for one DMR tire. I think they're way too thin, and I'm light and skinny.

Funny enough the cheap 1.75 I brought is a Cheng Shen and it has thicker sidewalls then tires costing 3-4 times more...

The tire I'm talkin about is pretty thick though... def reminded me of the Cheng Shen tires. If you want to try it out, I can give it to you. I just keep it as a spare.

specialized pro 24x2.0
    *  Fast, rounded tread
    * Casing: 120tpi Nylon
    * Center tread compound: Highly durable 70 shore A
    * Shoulder Compound: 60 shore A for traction
    * Wire Bead
    * Max Inflation: 20" 125 psi./ 24" 100 psi.
862gm

its a dual compound tread. sides are softer60A.  middle is 70A.  the sidewall says dual casing.  i personaly think the sidewalls are tough.

once my holyrollers die, this will be it.
i think that 2.4s are way too thick for what i do. plus 100psi is gangsta.

I'm running specialized pro 2.0 on the front of my BMX.
It's 125 psi for 20'' and I usually run it around 110 or so - love how fast it rolls.
It should be good for street/park/dirt. Never used it on dirt, but pretty happy with it for street and park. One thing about it though - it's so tight, it's very hard to put it on - I gave up after breaking 3 tire levers. Took it to a shop, they had to use metal levers to put it on. Maybe it's not that bad on 24'' though since psi rating is lower.

yeah the tire was a pain in the ass to put on by hand.  i did as much as i could, leaving about 6inches of exposed bead on one side.  i left it over night like that.  the next day it was stretched enough to finish putting on by hand.

Not only am i a bad mechanic - but i do not have time to work on my bike.  Im looking for a good performance shop that can do all type of work on my 06 YFZ450.  Any one know of a shop or a mecahnic?  I was using "Image Racing" but they seem to have vanished.
I currently need carb & tranny work.
